McCarthy Stone announced their plans to build a block of flats on the site of Maelgwyn Road Car Park in May 2024. This follows an earlier proposed redevelopment during 2021. The car park is currently leased by Conwy County Borough Council, and is one of the largest public car parks in Llandudno. Last time around I ran a petition and hundreds of people made their voices clear - they wanted to see this car park protected.
At the stage, McCarthy Stone are carrying out a Pre-Application Consultation, a legal requirement before they can submit a large planning application to the Council for consideration. The Consultation is open until 8 June, and I would encourage everyone with an interest to respond.
You can view McCarthy Stone's plans online by clicking here. You can respond to the consultation by emailing [email protected] or writing to McCarthy Stone, Llandudno Consultation, Cavendish, Dalton Place, 29 John Dalton Street, Manchester, M2 6FW by 8th June 2024.
The planned development is for 57 apartments with 36 parking spaces. That means they're already 21 parking spaces short - include the loss of the existing 134 car parking spaces, and these plans will mean a net loss of over 150 parking spaces close to our town centre. Parking is already a challenge in Llandudno, and this reduction in parking will be bad news for local residents, businesses and visitors.
The planned development is much larger than the surrounding buildings, and will have an immensely overbearing presence. It will also have a negative impact on Llandudno's Conservation Area. Don't take my word for it - take a look at the plans yourself and let McCarthy Stone know what you think.
